September is National Preparedness Month

Have you ever caught yourself watching or reading the news about a flood, hurricane, tornado or other large-scale disaster and catch yourself thinking, “I’m glad that won’t ever happen here”?

We’ve all done it; felt bad for others when disaster strikes – maybe we’ve even volunteered or given money toward disaster relief. But how many of us go so far as to be sure we’re prepared if it should happen to us?

Complacency is the enemy. And what’s the best defense against an enemy? A good offense. In this case, you have the power to do something BEFORE something bad happens.

Next week’s emergency preparedness focus is about “How to Build an Emergency Kit.” Learn how to get prepared NOW so that you don’t regret it LATER.

Below are some kit basics:

·         Water

·         Food

·         Battery-powered or hand crank radio and a NOAA Weather Radio

·         Flashlight with extra batteries

·         First aid kit

·         Whistle

·         Dust mask, plastic sheeting and duct tape

·         Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties

·         Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities

·         Manual can opener

·         Local maps (printed – you can’t always rely on Google!)

·         Cell phone with chargers, inverter or solar charger

There’s a lot more, though, to know. Get all the details at Ready.gov. – A message from Kristi Rollwagen, Metropolitan Airports Commission emergency preparedness manager
