MSP among the most efficiently managed airports in North America

The Air Transport Research Society (ATRS), the world’s leading academic society in the air transportation field, has named Minneapolis-St. Paul International the third most efficiently managed large airport in North America.

The award follows an announcement last week by TripAdvisor that MSP finished in the top three in the United States as a “Travelers Choice Favorite” large U.S. airport overall and in the categories of airport shopping and dining.

“The fact we are able to operate in the highest tier of North American airports our size for efficiency and still win top awards for the experience we provide to travelers speaks volumes about the dedication of our staff and the leadership provided by the Metropolitan Airports Commission board,” said Brian Ryks, executive director and CEO of the Metropolitan Airports Commission. “It’s the people working behind the scenes who really set MSP International apart from the competition.”

In developing its results, the ATRS studied data on 205 airports, including 82 in North America. Data reviewed included general airport information, traffic, aeronautical revenue, non-aeronautical revenue, operating expenses and balance sheets. The ATRS compared inputs by airport operators, such as labor and other non-capital soft costs, to outputs such as aircraft movements, passengers, non-aeronautical revenues and cargo to develop a gross variable factor productivity score. The top five scoring airports in North America (from highest to lowers) are: Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson, Charlotte-Douglas International Airport, Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport, Vancouver (Canada) International Airport and Tampa International Airport.
