MSP's Terminal 1 inbound roadway work starts Aug. 6

Reconstruction work on the inbound roadway at MSP Airport's Terminal 1 will begin on Thursday, Aug. 6.

The Metropolitan Airport Commission board recently approved the project, which addresses deteriorating road conditions and ongoing maintenance requirements on that stretch of pavement.

The roadwork will be constructed in phases. For the duration of the project, one lane will be open to traffic at all times and, for a majority of the project, two lanes will be open to traffic. In addition, access to rental car agencies and public parking will always be available.

Given the reduced passenger volume at MSP due to COVID-19, the project isn't expected to lead to significant delays. But employees and passengers should be aware of shifts in lanes, anticipate construction zone speed limits and drive safely while in the zone.

The work on the inbound roadway is anticipated to be completed by the first week of November.

In a separate project that will extend into October, MnDOT recently announced several upcoming ramp closures near MSP.

  • The ramp from Highway 5 west to 494 east will close at 5 a.m. Monday, Aug. 3, through October.
  • The ramp from 494 west to 34th Avenue will close at 5 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 5, through October.
  • The ramp from Highway 5 west to 34th Avenue will close at 5 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 6, through October.
  • Watch for lane restrictions and ramp closures at the 35E/494 interchange and in the surrounding area.
