Sun Country begins Chicago route

Monday, July 1, marks the beginning of hometown airline Sun Country’s newest route – MSP to Chicago Midway – which will be offered twice daily on a two-class Boeing 737.

In an effort to attract business travelers, Sun Country Airlines, a carrier known mostly for flying leisure routes, will try to muscle its way into one of the USA's most competitive air-travel markets.

Five airlines currently fly between the Twin Cities and at least one of the two Chicago-area airports. Delta flies to both Chicago O'Hare and Chicago Midway airports. American, Spirit and United fly between MSP and O'Hare while Southwest flies between MSP and Midway. Combined, those carriers run an average of 44 daily round-trip flights.

"We know there's a lot of competition there but there are also a huge number of passengers in that market," John Fredericksen, CEO of Sun Country Airlines, said to the Star Tribune. "Minneapolis-Chicago is one of the most popular routes from the Minneapolis airport and is the most frequently requested new destination by our customers," Fredericksen said in a company statement.
