See how 'The Aurora' was created

Through playful use of movement and light, The Aurora – the four-years-in-the-making iconic artwork at MSP Airport – brings the natural beauty of Minnesota indoors.

The Aurora was designed by internationally acclaimed artist Jen Lewin and selected by the MSP Arts and Culture Program, a partnership between the Metropolitan Airports Commission and the Airport Foundation MSP.

The 9-minute documentary about the making of The Aurora describes how the intersection of art and technology can transform a public space. The piece, which is suspended through an oval opening between the Ticketing and Baggage Claim levels in Terminal 1, was completed in March 2021 and features original music by local composer Paul Fonfara.

The documentary about the artwork was produced by Ben Owen, director of Arts and Culture for the Airport Foundation MSP; Cassie Schmid, director of Strategic Marketing for the MAC; and Melissa Scovronski, manager with the MAC's Strategic Marketing Department.

The video was directed and edited by Kari Jo Skogquist, the MAC's audio/visual communications specialist.
