New APD training helps employees support travelers and coworkers in crisis

The Airport Police Department (APD) is opening its mental health and crisis training to all MAC and airport employees. The voluntary, two-hour course led by APD’s behavioral health unit (BHU) teaches employees to recognize when someone may be in crisis and how to respond.

What you’ll learn

The in-person course will teach employees to identify potential signs of anxiety, depression, substance use, dementia and autism. Participants will learn how to respond with empathy and connect people with resources.

Know the difference: 911 or BHU

The training will provide guidance on who and when to call:

  • 911: if someone talks about harming themselves or others, can’t care for themselves or seems to need immediate help.
  • BHU at 612-726-5984: for non-emergencies, such as requesting resources for yourself or someone you may know.

Trainings take place on Level 4 of the Hub Building, between the Red and Blue parking ramps at Terminal 1, in the classroom directly above the Badging Office.
