Voices that Shape Passenger Journeys: Estes Enterprises — A Legacy of Service and Heritage

This year the MAC Office of Civil Rights and Small Business Development will honor each cultural month by recognizing the rich background of those that shape our communities, vendors and the traveling public. Each heritage month is an opportunity to honor the contributions of individuals and businesses that make a lasting impact on air travel. By highlighting these stories, we showcase the remarkable achievements of people that shape our passengers’ journeys at MSP and beyond.

For Black History Month, we recognize Estes Enterprises. For more than five decades, Estes Enterprises has been a cornerstone of convenience and hospitality for travelers passing through the Twin Cities. Founded on family values and an unwavering commitment to community, this second-generation, Black-owned business continues to thrive while honoring its cultural heritage.

A business built on dedication

Estes Enterprises started 53 years ago with streetside gift shops in Minneapolis. In the late 1980s, they opened their first location at MSP Airport. Today, they operate multiple retail locations across MSP and Tampa International Airport, including Estes Twin Cities News, Skyconnect Electronics and Estes On The Fly. These stores offer travelers everything they need — from grab-and-go snacks and beverages to electronics, souvenirs and specialty retail products — all delivered with a signature dose of Minnesota Nice.

What sets Estes apart

Unlike many in the industry, Estes Enterprises is more than a business — it’s a family legacy. Owner Frederic Estes reflects on the journey:

“We are a second-generation, family-owned business built on blood, sweat and tears. My parents, sister and I built this business through decades of hands-on operation, personal investment, sacrifices and unwavering commitment to serving people and our communities.”

This deep-rooted dedication has positioned Estes Enterprises as a trusted name for travelers seeking quality and care. It also led to one of Frederic’s most memorable customer interactions, which happened at MSP. He assisted a visibly upset passenger who was traveling for their father’s funeral — going the extra mile to support them emotionally and spiritually.

Honoring Black History Month

For Frederic Estes, Black History Month is more than a celebration — it’s a call to action:

“Black History is American History. As we celebrate the Centennial Anniversary of Black History Month, we have the opportunity and responsibility to continue recognizing our ancestors who came before us and sacrificed so we could continue their legacies as we stand on their shoulders. The strength and achievement of our past gives us hope and power for what we can and must achieve today and tomorrow. Our past is strong, but our faith is stronger.”

Through its presence in airports and its commitment to excellence, Estes Enterprises embodies the resilience and progress that Black History Month represents.
