TSA announces new software for security scanners

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) announced last week that installation of new software—Automated Target Recognition (ATR) - is complete on six MSP Airport security scanners.

When ATR detects potential threat items on a passenger, a generic outline of a person appears on the monitor highlighting any areas on the passenger that require additional screening. If no threats are detected, the text “OK” appears on the monitor and the passenger is cleared.

The new system will expedite checkpoint lines because it eliminates the need for security officers to review images from locations where they can't see the passenger. Joe Taney, deputy federal security director for the TSA in Minnesota, states that the new software will reduce the scanning process from 20 to 30 seconds down to 12 to 15 seconds.
