More convenient COVID-19 vaccine site opens at MSP Feb. 22

It will be a lot easier to get a COVID-19 vaccine or booster shot at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP) beginning Tuesday, Feb. 22.

That's when MSP will consolidate its two existing vaccination sites to a single location on Level 1 between the Blue and Red parking ramps at Terminal 1 that is readily accessible via light rail and bus lines.

"This will be a lot more convenient because this site is directly below the MSP COVID-19 testing site that many have already visited – and you don't have to have a valid boarding pass to get through security at Terminal 1," said Kristi Rollwagen, manager of Emergency Programs with the Metropolitan Airports Commission (MAC), which operates MSP.

Since June 2021 MSP had provided vaccination sites at both Terminals 1 and 2. The Terminal 1 site required travelers to pass through TSA security while the Terminal 2 site was located pre-security. (The sites are located at MSP but operated by Primary Health under contract with the Minnesota Department of Health.)

Initially, both sites offered just the Johnson & Johnson vaccine. But beginning in late December, the Moderna vaccine was added, which dramatically increased visits.

Those interested in getting the free vaccinations or booster shots are encouraged to schedule an appointment. The site is open seven days a week from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The MSP COVID Vaccine Clinic accepts patients 18 and older who are seeking their first, second or booster doses of Moderna vaccine, and patients seeking their initial or booster doses of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.

If you are registering for a booster dose, you will need to provide proof of your vaccination history such as:

  • An original Centers for Disease Control (CDC) vaccination card, or
  • A paper or electronic copy of a CDC COVID-19 vaccination card, or
  • An original or copy of an alternative official vaccination record, as proof of FDA- or WHO-approved COVID-19 vaccination status including electronic copies of vaccination records

To drive to the Terminal 1 vaccine site, follow the signs to the Blue and Red parking ramps and enter the lane on the far left designated for the MSP COVID-19 testing site. (There is no charge for parking.) Take the elevator to Level 1 and follow the signs for the COVID Vaccine Clinic.

In 2021, nearly 5,400 people were vaccinated at MSP. The new site is designed to accommodate about 350 people per day.
